A Transmedia / Cross-Platform Competition

StoryWorld Quest presents a co-located inaugural event, PitchQuest. Participants will be challenged to develop Digital  Media, Entertainment, Content and/or Technologies that envision and advance entertainment and storytelling experiences on the theme of “Making the Most of My City” or an open THEME of their choice. Submissions open online June 15 through October 10. Finalists will pitch in person on October 24 with the winners announced at StoryWorld Quest. Winners luncheon will be held on October 25 at NAIT.

The PitchQuest competition is seeking story originality, audience innovation/interactivity, new business models and marketing approaches.

 

Six professional and six student teams will be selected from all online applications. They will pitch their ideas in front of an expert panel of judges who will award a $10,000 first prize:

 

  • Professionals $8,000 CAD
  • Students $2,000 CAD.
  • There will also be other valuable prizes.

Teams will be judged on the quality of the experience they design, the sophistication of the prototype they present, the story and transmedia strategy, and their capacity to deliver a convincing and professional business case and pitch.

 

* Transmedia definition for PitchQuest: Storytelling and character development across multiple platforms and experience. Not to be confused with repurposing content across multiple platforms.

 

All runners up will be invited as honored guest to the StoryWorld Quest Conference October 24-26.

 

Registration fees:

Students – $15 CAD per person
Professionals – $50 CAD per person

DETAILS

 

Project Purpose and Description:

The PitchQuest aims to find best projects from students and professionals who are challenged to push the boundaries of storytelling and technology combined. Participants will choose ONE of the two design challenges below.

 

Choose ONE of the design challenges below:

 

Design challenge 1: Making the Most of your City :This is your opportunity to Imagine How to make the most of your city work for all people (this applies to any city in the world):

 

A. The design challenge can answer these questions:  

  • How to make your city work for all people – locals, workers, drivers, cyclists?
  • How to make your city work for all tourists?
  • How to make the most of your city for sustainability?
  • How can a city be the most entertaining?
  • How to make the most of your city for the future?

 

B. Participants will be challenged to Make the Most of their city by conceiving, designing and building a digital transmedia project (apps, experiences, websites, prototypes, games, virtual reality, glass experiences, and more)  using a minimum of three platforms, technologies, content and in person experiences .

 

C. Teams will be judged on the quality of the experience they design, the sophistication of the prototype they present, and their capacity to deliver a convincing and professional business case and pitch.

 

Design challenge 2 : Open theme – create a Transmedia or cross-platform project/experience with your own theme.

 

A. The project can be ANY of these:

  • Web Series / Video/ Animation
  • Interactive Narrative / Website
  • App for Mobile and / or Tablet
  • Game or ARG (alternate reality game)
  • Virtual Reality and/or Augmented reality
  • Experience

 

B. Participants will be challenged to tell their cross-platform NARRATIVE by conceiving, designing and building a digital transmedia project using a minimum of three platforms, technologies, content and in person experiences .

 

C. Teams will be judged on the quality of the experience they design, the sophistication of the prototype they present, and their capacity to deliver a convincing and professional business case and pitch.

 

Summary:

D. Finalists will be announced on October 15. Each team/individual will be contacted directly with further information.

 

E. Final pitches will be presented on October 24 at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology.

 

F. Prizes will be awarded on October 25 at the StoryWorld Quest Conference, during the PitchQuest Awards Luncheon. Hosted on the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology campus.

 

G. Six professional and six student teams will selected from the online applications of hundreds to pitch their ideas in front of a distinguished panel of judges in hopes of winning $10,000 and numerous prizes.

  • Professionals $8,000 CAD 
  • Students $2,000 CAD

 

H. Applicants can apply individually or as teams. Up to 4 per team. Individual applicants will be assigned to teams as we are looking for a multi-disciplinary collaborative effort.

 

I. Application fee:

  • $15 CAD for students
  • $50 CAD for professional

Application fee to be paid at time of online submission.  Non-refundable.

 

J. All six runner up teams will be VIP guests at the StoryWorldQuest Conference at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology Friday October 24 through Sunday October 26.

 

Competition Timeline:

  • Application submission opens : June 15 - Oct 10
  • Finalists announced: October 15
  • Final Pitch Presentation: October 24

October 24 2014 – PitchQuest final judging starts in the morning. A separate email will be sent to all finalist teams with details.

 

Proposal Guideline:
This application process represents the requirements for an open and competitive process.  Applications will be accepted until 5pm PST Oct 10, 2014 submitted online.

Who Should Participate: 
The competition is interdisciplinary and open to all to students and professionals alike, including coders, visual and audio designers, content visionaries, business visionaries, storytellers, producers, artists, advertising and marketing firms. 

Participants can compete as individuals or in teams of up to four.

  • Professionals – non-students, media and entertainment professionals
  • Students must currently enrolled and able to provide documentation

Judging Criteria: Teams will be selected based on the quality of the application’s design, story, transmedia strategy, and execution.
For this application: We are seeking written proposals and prototyped projects. Supporting assets such as video, powerpoint, still photographs, links to websites, games, apps, etc – are all welcome.
